Overview

Malta offers an enticing combination of sunshine, history and culture. The narrow cobblestone streets of the towns are crowded with Norman cathedrals and Baroque palaces that gleam inthe perpetual sunshine. The 136km coastline is scattered with tiny harbours, rocky coves, towering cliffs and some superb sandy beaches.

The capital Valleta is a city with a rich history. Originally built in the 16th century it was a showcase of modern town planning in its day. Mdina, the silent city, is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city, and its unusual blend of medieval and Baroque architecture is fascinating. Day trips to the nearby islands of Gozo, Comino or Sicily are wonderful excursions, or for an alternative experience why not swim with the dolphins (available to those aged eight years and over) at the Marine Park? The island is also a diver’s paradise with warm welcoming waters, excellent visibility and dramatic underwater vistas.

Malta’s geography and climate has made it a perfect film location over the years. Scenes from Gladiator and a considerable proportion of 2004’s Troy were filmed in Malta. Fans of the film Popeye can also visit the set, which can be found in Mellieha.

With its great beaches, fabulous climate and remarkable history, a holiday to Malta has so much to offer.
